Progress is being made on the Mattoon Hospital/Museum renovation project. Below is a series of pictures that will enable website viewers to see it for themselves. Take a look:
In the late 1800’s, the Mattoon Hospital was constructed to serve the healthcare needs of the community and surrounding area. The best picture we have of what the building looked like back then is:
By early 2019, the building had deteriorated significantly:
However, throughout the summer, volunteers, along with hired construction workers, have been busy restoring and renovating the exterior of the building. Much progress has been made.
Bottom line, things are moving along very nicely and pretty much on schedule. Next comes the interior work and then, landscaping. Lots accomplished and lots more to do but, we are seeing progress that makes Mattoon and surrounding area very proud. When completed, the museum will be an attraction for visitors to the area as well as a place of learning for children of all ages – a unique preservation of north central Wisconsin’s history and heritage.
Many donations of items to be displayed in the museum have been made and we continue to encourage people growing up in the area surrounding Mattoon (or with relatives having done so) to both consider donating items of historical interest for the museum and to strongly consider membership in the Mattoon Historical Society. Thanks!!!!!
